When the Sox and Cubs come out swinging this weekend, attention will be heightened because of The Punch.
What better way to watch than by making your own punch?
For the record: punch as in the beverage.
Concocting a new punch is not to be taken lightly, especially for an important event like the City Series. Ya gotta get the mix right. Chicago baseball fans being who they are, the punch has to have a beer base. Now, playing with beer in a mixed drink is tricky. It can’t be fancy, but you want something different, something that packs a wallop. Tequila loads the bases on that score. Add limeade and you’re well on your way to a beer margarita.
Sounds odd, but trust us, they’re growing in popularity for a reason.
But that’s not quite enough. It needs something else. How about a nod to all the players from the Caribbean and Venezuela? Rum it is, then.
And so was born our Black & Blue Brewskarita, or Serious City Series Punch. Tasters loved its refreshing, slightly tart taste.
Careful, though. Like Michael Barrett, this one can sneak up on ya.
Serious City Series Punch
a.k.a. Black & Blue Brewskarita (Adapted from Allrecipes.com)
Preparation time: 5 minutes – Yield: 6 servings
1 can (12 ounces) frozen limeade concentrate
1 1/2 cups tequila, silver or blanco
1 1/2 cups water
1 bottle (12 ounces) beer
1 cup rum, preferably Puerto Rican golden
Ice
1 lime, cut into wedges
6 sport peppers for garnish, not optional
Pour limeade, tequila, water, beer and rum into a punch bowl or large pitcher; stir until limeade dissolves. Serve over ice in glasses, garnished with lime wedges. Lance each sport pepper on a swizzle stick and–for this particular series, try suspending it over each glass–for 10 minutes, not 10 games.
