This is in reference to “Bill aimed at research trade; Activists target dealers who collect animals–including, some say, stolen pets–for sale to science facilities” (News, June 30).
Thank you to the Chicago Tribune for this excellent article about the sales of dogs and cats to the experimentation industry.
Please allow me to clarify one point:
The total number of animals used in U.S. laboratories every year is estimated to be more than 115 million, rather than the 1.1 million stated in the article.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture does not require labs to report the number of mice, rats and birds they use.
As mice and rats compose 90 percent of animals experimented on, the government statistics are terribly deceptive.
