In “Dangerous callers” (Voice of the people, July 9), letter Joseph Andrews rightly expressed his concern about the unenforceable city ordinance prohibiting the use of a cell phone while driving.
The residents as well as the visitors to the city, on any given day, can witness the spectacle of a majority of drivers, including cops, blatantly ignoring this law.
Andrews was being naive to suggest that using bumper stickers to discourage cell-phone use while driving would somehow solve the problem.
The only way this law can be enforced is by requiring the auto owners to install a device in their cars that would jam the signals of the cell phone until the car’s engine is switched off.
Of course the visitors to the city shall be properly informed about the law through the city Web site, and should be ticketed promptly for any violation.
I think the City Council must do something immediately to address this growing problem, which is likely to contribute to more traffic fatalities in the city, particularly in the Loop.
