Thanks to Steve Chapman for his astute column, which asks why the Bush administration didn’t attempt to block publication of disclosures about its secret government program to monitor financial transactions–if the administration truly believed that such disclosures would compromise national security.
What Chapman didn’t point out is that the Bush administration is pathologically secretive and sneaky. A conservative Supreme Court continually rebukes it for ignoring the Constitution and existing law.
An administration that doesn’t respect the rule of law has a big stake in intimidating the press that keeps “we the people” informed.
