– Avril Lavigne has married fellow Canadian singer-songwriter Deryck Whibley, People magazine reports on its Web site. Lavigne, 21, in a Vera Wang gown, wed Whibley, 26, the frontman for band Sum 41, on Saturday in California.
– Chicago–and Steven Spielberg–got a surprise over the weekend when Tom Cruise made an appearance at the Chicago International Film Festival Summer Gala to give a Lifetime Achievement Award to Spielberg. Cruise also shocked the 700 gala guests at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers.
– The director of the Vatican Museums in Rome, where treasures include works by Michelangelo and Raphael, said the museums want some modern art. “I would like very much to have a Picasso,” Francesco Buranelli said in a Sunday story in Italian newspaper La Stampa.
