The shuttle Discovery and its crew of six returned safely home Monday, landing at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Fla., and rejuvenating a space program that until now had been vexed by the same chronic foam problem that brought down Columbia three years ago.
Lacrosse team potential witnesses
Every member of Duke’s lacrosse team is a potential witness in the case against three players charged with rape, a Durham, N.C., prosecutor said in arguing for access to their student ID card records. The cards can be used to buy things and gain access to campus buildings. Attorneys for the uncharged players argued that the information is protected by federal privacy laws.
Hastert out of hospital
Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert of Illinois was released from a Maryland hospital Monday after spending several days being treated for a skin infection. Hastert “is ready for another busy legislative week,” said spokesman Ron Bonjean. The spokesman did not provide further details about Hastert’s bout with cellulitis, an infection that can spread rapidly without treatment.
Toddler dies in hot car
A 3-year-old boy died after he apparently locked himself inside a car in 90-degree heat, relatives and neighbors said. Abraham Barlue was found in the car by his grandmother, Vester Zeon, who said she had given the boy permission to go play at a neighbor’s apartment in South Bend, Ind., while she was cooking over the weekend. “I do not know how he got a key,” Zeon told WNDU-TV.

Virginia wants to make it easier for water lovers to find relief away from shore. The state Health Department is planning a floating restroom. It would be used by users of small boats without bathrooms. But will boaters use it? One fisherman doubts it. Connie Barbour says boaters use buckets in an emergency. “Unfortunately, more than likely, they dump it over,” he said.
