Doris E. Bruchas, nee Emmons, 85, of Downers Grove, IL, passed on Monday, July 10, at Good Samaritan Hospital after a brief illness following surgery. Doris and her late husband, Al, who preceded her in death in February, had been residents of Downers Grove since 1949. They had been married for 63 years. For the last four years, she had been a resident of the Saratoga Grove Assisted Living Facility. She attended College of the Ozarks, Clarksville, AR, received a Bachelors of Science degree from George Peabody Teachers’ College, Nashville, TN in 1942 and in 1976, earned a Masters of Science in Education from Northern Illinois University. Doris taught high school science in L.A., elementary education in Arkansas, also in Monte Vista, CO, Oak Ridge, TN, at Madison School in Hinsdale, IL. She returned to teaching in 1962 at Washington until the school was closed and then taught at Fairmount School and conducted a reading clinic at North High School. Doris was honored as Downers Grove Education Association’s 1983 Teacher of the Year. She retired in 1986. Doris is survived by sons, Michael of Fairfax, VA and Alan of Wichita, KS. A memorial service is scheduled for July 20 at the First United Methodist Church of Downers Grove, 1032 Maple Avenue, at 2 p.m. A reception will take place at 1 p.m. preceding the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make a donation to the First Methodist Church or to the Downers Grove Public Library in Doris’ name.
