Before he even threw a pitch in the much-anticipated future Hall of Fame matchup with Houston’s Roger Clemens, Greg Maddux’s season earned-run average took a dramatic drop. Though his record didn’t change, Maddux’s ERA went from 4.99 to 4.60 after an official scorer in Miami changed a hit to an error–in the Cubs’ 9-3 loss to the Marlins on May 24. The Cubs appealed Ron Jernick’s original ruling to league officials, who asked Jernick to review the play. “It could have gone either way,” Jernick said. The play was in the fifth inning: Ronny Cedeno’s one-hop throw to first base was ruled a hit for Florida’s Hanley Ramirez. The Marlins went on to score five runs. After the change, the runs became unearned and Cedeno’s error total rose to 17.
