My heart goes out to the innocent civilians who walk the streets of Beirut with their spouses and children. They have committed no crime, yet they suffer the brunt of the punishment.
Can we as Americans, safe and self-concerned here in our homes, even imagine what Lebanon faces today?
In the blink of an eye, the everyday noises of a vibrant city–beeping taxis, bustling street vendors and people lazily conversing over midday lunches–come screeching to a halt. In their places there is a terrifying stillness in the city as people take cover and war planes approach. Terror-filled silence gives way to deafening crashes as bombs pound their way through, demolishing bridges and buildings in their wake. A city and its lifeblood–its people–are ripped apart. It is the innocents who suffer the costs of this “military campaign” the most. It is their lives wrapped up in fragile gardens and friendly businesses that die. I pray for peace and a quick resolution for the sake of these civilians.
