When it was first proposed that conductors be removed from CTA trains in a cost-cutting move years ago, we were assured that conductors would be on board all trains in subway sections in case of events like the recent Blue Line derailment and fire. This compromise was discontinued quietly after a short period. Fortunately no one was killed in the recent event despite the absence of a conductor, who could have expedited an orderly exit. The perennial underfunding of the CTA makes it less certain we’ll be so fortunate next time.
