Donald Frederick “Coach” Mulligan, died July 17 at home. Born in Illinois on Jan. 18, 1932. He was a 1949 graduate and salutatorian at St. Ignatius Prep in Chicago. Don ran track, cross-country, and won many awards in elocution contests. He attended Maryknoll Seminary, and graduated Loyola University in 1953. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 – 1955. In 1959, Don received his Master’s Degree from DePaul University. He taught history as well as coaching track and cross-country at Ignatius, and later at Loyola Academy where he brought many championships. Don followed his brother Bill to Long Beach, coaching at LBCC and Banning H.S. In 1977-78 he served as the head coach of the National Team in Saudi Arabia. For the past 40 years he coached at a sports camp in Sweden. Don spoke several different languages, and had friends all over the world from his travels and volunteer work. He went on several African safaris, and frequented the Ice House in Norway. Don was a member of the Long Beach Century Club. In lieu of flowers, donations to Loyola Academy or the Century Club would be appreciated. His parents, William and Dorothy; and a sister, Charlotte Stitzer, predeceased Don. He is survived by his brother, William (Dorothy) Mulligan; sister, Kay (Tom) Huguelet; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He had many special friends, Diane, Dean (Tom) Feierabend, Dr. Bob (Mae) Brown and many others. Funeral Mass Friday, July 21, 10 a.m. at St. Barnabas Church, Long Beach, CA.
