In “Graduate conduct,” a letter to the editor in the July 11 Chicago Tribune Voice of the people section, letter writer Tim Cahill seems to have a problem with respect.
He doesn’t seem to respect other people if they don’t conform to his notions of propriety.
Well I don’t know what school graduation Cahill was at where he felt so besieged, but people have a right to honor each other in their own way, not his.
I happen to have been a speaker recently at my university’s matriculation ceremonies. They were held in the Grand Ballroom of Navy Pier this June.
Several hundred of our now former students strutted, danced, sashayed and, in on case, rolled along in a wheelchair to the great applause of their fellows, to receive their due.
Yes there was celebration.
Celebration is often loud.
If Cahill doesn’t want to celebrate, he shouldn’t go to the party.
