A few weeks back, Phil Rogers suggested the Cubs didn’t have a player deserving of the All-Star Game. Really? If there is a better pitcher than Carlos Zambrano in the National League, please tell me who he is. With apologies to Arizona’s Brandon Webb, Zambrano is a Cy Young Award front-runner.
Some will say you can’t give the award to a pitcher on a team as awful as the Cubs. Yes, the Cubs are awful, but Big Z had 10 wins and the Cubs had 37 as of Friday. That’s more than 25 percent of their total, and think how many he’d have if he pitched against the Cubs or if that woeful offense scored some runs on the days he pitched.
Note to Jim Hendry: Zambrano is a franchise player who should be locked up for life and retire in a Cubs uniform. After signing Zambrano, go get Barry Zito and either Carlos Lee or Alfonso Soriano, no matter what you have to offer them. Overpay them if you have to–just get it done. You have $19 million freed up if you lose Kerry Wood and Greg Maddux.
