It bothers me when sportswriters and fans act as if White Sox fans are “panicking” because we feel some moves have to be made if the Sox are to reach the level they were at last year. I wouldn’t say we’re panicking, we’re showing legitimate concern.

Not because the Sox are 5 1/2 games back–there’s a lot of time left. Not because they had lost seven of their last nine games as of Friday–even the best teams hit slumps, and Detroit will too. It’s because the starting pitchers have an ERA of 5.60 since June 1, and if that doesn’t change the Sox will not be in the playoffs.

Javier Vazquez and Freddy Garcia have shown no consistency and only have good records because the offense is explosive. Changes must be made. Any team, even a championship team, always should try to improve. The White Sox have the means with their deep minor-league system. Ken Williams must make it happen.
