EVENT OF THE WEEK

U.S. attorneys at NU law program

Patrick J. Fitzgerald, U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Stephen J. Murphy, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, are among prosecutors and defense attorneys gathering for Northwestern University School of Law’s program on developments in the world of criminal law.

The annual 2006 Short Course for Prosecuting Attorneys and Short Course for Defense Lawyers in Criminal Cases takes place Monday through Thursday at the School of Law, 357 E. Chicago Ave.

Fitzgerald, who is special counsel in the investigation of the disclosure of the identity of a Central Intelligence Agency employee, will deliver the keynote address to prosecutors and defense lawyers at 1 p.m. Monday. He has played a role in investigations involving terrorism financing, public corruption, corporate fraud and violent crime, including narcotics and gang prosecutions. Fitzgerald has served as prosecutor in terrorism cases such as United States vs. Osama Bin Laden and U.S. vs. Omar Abdel Rahman.

Murphy, whose prosecutorial priorities are in the areas of counterterrorism, public corruption, narcotics enforcement and violent crime, will share his expertise at a full-day trial techniques workshop on Thursday.
