Smart heart
Do you find Sharon Stone’s Mensa membership more attractive than her looks? Think C-Span is gripping TV? Then tighten up that bow-tie, pack up your encyclopedia and meet your brainy match at Dating for Nerds. This singles social for smarties includes Scrabble, Taboo and other board games, plus giveaways and–egads!–a cocktail. Produced by Nerds at Heart. 6:30 p.m. $10. Guthries Tavern, 1300 W. Addison St. 312-351-3285.
Star gazing
Owen Wilson’s all right, but is his movie really worth the 10 bucks? Maybe . . . not. Why not save your pennies, pack a picnic and spend the evening with Cary Grant at the Chicago Outdoor Film Festival instead? The legendary hunk stars on the big screen with Katharine Hepburn in the classic comedy “Bringing Up Baby.” Added bonus: Film critic Richard Roeper introduces the screening. 8:15 p.m.; movie starts at 8:50 p.m. Free. Butler Field, Grant Park, 100 S. Lake Shore Drive 312-744-3315.
On the vine
You overslept, spilled your coffee, and now you’re just plain frazzled. Go ahead, take the rest of the day off. Better yet, kick back at Scoozi’s Galleria Wine Down, where you’ll sample 30 Italian and American vintages, nibble Scoozi’s signature antipasti and watch local artist David Weinberg create a mixed-media piece on site. Feel better yet? 6 p.m. $25. Reservations required. 410 W. Huron St. 312-943-5900.
WED 7/26
Hands off
For its second issue, creative non-fiction magazine No Touching is focusing on music, so it makes sense that a live band (Brian Sharpe and Fire Falls) also will perform at this release party. Local authors Ira Brooker, Molly Each, Megan Stielstra and Marcia Brenner (all current or former Columbia College students) and others read from their works. 8 p.m. $5 suggested donation benefits No Touching Magazine. Phyllis’ Musical Inn, 1800 W. Division St. 773-283-2070.
THU 7/27
Rum 101
Wine University? Uh, sort of. That’s what this monthly series is called, but this month Mas takes a detour from its usual grape-oriented curriculum to focus on premium rums. So broaden your knowledge–and your tastebuds–and get schooled in the alcohol’s history during a seminar with a four-course dinner and pairings with each course. Owner Hubie Greenwald hosts. 7:30 p.m. $50. Reservations required. 1670 W. Division St. 773-276-8700.
