Though teens are coming out at an earlier age than they did 10 years ago, that openness comes with a price, said Kevin Jennings, executive director of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network. Jennings said that a 2005 GLSEN study of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students ages 13 to 20 revealed disturbing trends about in-school harassment.
75.4% Often or frequently heard derogatory remarks.
89.2% Heard the term “you’re so gay,” used to depict someone or something as stupid or worthless.
64.3% Felt unsafe at school because of their sexual orientation.
17.6% Said they were physically assaulted because of their sexual orientation.
16.5% Said school faculty or staff intervened frequently if they overheard a homophobic remark.
