Arnold “Arnie” F. Ludwig, 72, of Mishawaka, Indiana and Cape Coral, Florida, passed away Tuesday, July 25, 2006, at Rochester Methodist Hospital of Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Arnie was born on May 30, 1934, in Toledo, Ohio to Clarence J. and Helen , nee Przybylski, Ludwig. Mr. Ludwig retired February 1, 2001, with 17 years of service as the Assistant Dean and Director of Executive Education for the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame. In 1960, Arnie and his brother started the Seaway Candy Company, a sales distribution company based in Toledo, Ohio and then in 1969 the Ludwig Candy Company of Manteno, Illinois. He sold the candy companies in 1983 and started Basic Computer Literacy to introduce computers to elementary school children. While running Basic Computer Literacy he started with Notre Dame in 1984. Arnie was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Notre Dame, the University Club of Notre Dame, the Academic Investment Club of the College of Business at Notre Dame, the University of Wisconsin and University of Illinois Alumni Associations, and a former Director of the National W. Club where he served on the Board for five years. He won an academic scholarship to the University of Wisconsin for four years where he also played football as a co-captain his freshman year and lettered his sophomore year. He was on the High School all-city football team in Toledo, Ohio and was awarded an honorable mention in 1951 in the state of Ohio. In 1955, Arnie co-founded the Wisconsin Dairy Products Judging Team, placing 5th in the international competition in Atlantic City the same year. On December 31, 1958, Arnie married Betty Jean Bubolz who survives. Surviving with his wife is his daughter, Wendy Lou Ludwig of Manteno, Illinois, his son Timothy D. Ludwig of Mishawaka, Indiana; sisters, Luella Ludwig of Toledo, Ohio, Beatrice Winters of Toledo, Ohio; and his dog Toby. A brother, Richard Ludwig preceded him in death in 2005. Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m., Sunday, July 30, 2006, at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m., Monday, July 31, 2006, at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Notre Dame. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame.
