The concept of a contest to name the No. 1 player from each major-league team is a stupid endeavor. There is some, but very little historical perspective.

In some cases players from other eras were named, but only those who were obvious such as Babe Ruth.

It is virtually impossible to name a specific all-time team because baseball has no empirical measurements to make that determination. Just because a specific player had great stats or was popular with the fans does not make him an all-time great.

Many of the old-timers from the early history of the game seem to be forgotten in the current poll as fans choose those they know from the more recent past.

Comparing players is not equitable because the game changes from time to time, e.g. from a hitter’s game to a pitcher’s game or from a slugger’s game to one of “small ball.” Contests to determine “who is better than whom” become popularity contests of the familiar and leave the history of the game in the dark.
