Naperville’s Mary DeScenza came within .04 seconds of her personal-best time to finish third in the 100-meter butterfly at the U.S. Swimming Championships in Irvine, Calif. DeScenza, whose best event is the 200 butterfly, clocked 58.80 seconds in a race won by Natalie Coughlin in a personal-best 57.78 seconds.

Brendan Hansen broke his own world record in the 100-meter breaststroke. Hansen won with a time of 59.13 seconds, eclipsing the mark of 59.30 that he set in 2004.
