Carlos Guillen became the 10th player in Tigers history to hit for the cycle in a 10-4 win over the Devil Rays. Guillen doubled off Edwin Jackson in the eighth inning to cap the feat. He had an RBI triple in the second, a third-inning solo homer and a single in the sixth.

The Rangers needed just one inning worth of offense to subdue the Twins in a 9-0 victory. Gary Matthews Jr. hit a grand slam and Michael Young followed with a solo homer as Texas scored eight runs in the fourth as everyone except Mark Teixeira scored in the inning.

Bobby Abreu wasn’t a big factor as it was veteran Bernie Williams who had the big hit as the Yankees defeated the Blue Jays 5-1 and pulled into a virtual first-place tie with the Red Sox. Williams had a three-run double in the fourth. Abreu was 0-for-3 with a run.

New Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle ripped his ex-Phillies teammates, saying that they didn’t expect to win. Phillies reliever Arthur Rhodes reacted: “He doesn’t have a work ethic. After every start, he didn’t run or lift weights. He would sit in the clubhouse and eat ice cream.”

It has been a dream season for the Mets, but even the best team in the NL has a bad night on occasion. Closer Billy Wagner gave up a two-run pinch-homer to the Marlins’ Josh Willingham in a 6-5 loss. It was Wagner’s first blown save since June 21 against the Reds.

When Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo started 5-0, Red Sox fans openly questioned trading him for outfielder Wily Mo Pena. After a no-decision in a 10-4 loss to the Dodgers, Arroyo is 0-4 with a 4.92 ERA in his last eight starts.
