This is regarding “One thing aldermen won’t ban: Their raises; Foie gras forbidden; Trans fat endangered; Car cell phones restricted; No debate as pay hike cleared by committee” (Page 1, July 25).

In the article, Ald. Bernard Stone (50th) is quoted as saying, “Basing it on a cost of living is the same as any other person in private industry gets.”

I have been working in private industry for more than 30 years and have yet to see a cost-of-living raise.

Our raises are merit raises based on performance.

It would be wonderful if we all had jobs in which we could determine how much and when we were entitled to receive a raise.
