Orioles rookie Adam Loewen went into Saturday’s game against the Yankees with one win in eight starts and a 6.44 ERA. But 6 1/3 innings later, the left-hander left after holding New York scoreless on one hit, to the delight of 49,159 at Camden Yards.

The Braves were Brandon Phillips’ favorite team when he was growing up in Georgia–except when they played Barry Larkin and the Reds. Now Phillips is the one leading the Reds as he homered twice and drove in four runs in the an 8-6 win Saturday.

Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter said his bruised right thumb was much improved since he was injured Friday night and believes he’ll be able to make his next start. In fact, Carpenter said he thought he could pitch Saturday: “That’s how good it feels.”

Struggling reliever Fausto Carmona did it again Saturday, blowing his third save in as many opportunities since the Indians traded closer Bob Wickman to Atlanta on July 20. Carmona has allowed 11 runs and eight hits in 2 2/3 innings in his last four outings.

Left fielder Cliff Floyd left the Mets’ 4-3 win over the Phillies after aggravating an already sore left Achilles’ tendon while unsuccessfully chasing Aaron Roward’s foul drive in the left-field corner. Floyd said he should be able to play in Sunday night’s series finale.

Brewers right-hander Ben Sheets, who had made only seven starts this season due to injuries, left Saturday’s game after one inning because of tightness in a pectoral muscle. Sheets made only 22 starts last year before tearing a muscle in his side in August.
