Jarrod Washburn gave the kind of dominating performance Wednesday the Mariners had been looking for this season, not allowing a hit until Ben Zobrist’s bunt single leading off the sixth. After walking Carl Crawford with one out in the first, Washburn retired 14 straight.

The Twins recalled right-hander Boof Bonser from Triple-A Rochester to take the place of left-hander Francisco Liriano, on the DL with an injured elbow, in the rotation. Bonser, 2-3 with a 5.67 ERA in his previous two stints in the majors this season, is set to start Saturday.

UP

Gustavo Chacin, on the DL with a sore elbow since June 10, allowed two runs in five innings for Triple-A Syracuse in the left-hander’s third and final injury rehabilitation start before the pitcher rejoins the Blue Jays, for whom he’s expected to start Tuesday against the Devil Rays.

THREE DOWN

DOWN

Barry Zito, who had won four of his previous five starts for the Athletics, never retired the side in order Wednesday as he gave up four homers and 11 hits in a 14-0 loss to the Rangers. Though he was 10-4 since mid-May, he has allowed 18 runs in his last four starts.

DOWN

Mets outfielder Cliff Floyd went on the DL for the 10th time in his major-league career and 2nd time this year, sidelined because of tendinitis in his left Achilles’ tendon. Floyd was hitting .245 with 10 home runs and 36 RBIs. He was on the DL in June with a sprained left ankle.

DOWN

Marlins left-hander Dontrelle Willis largely was his own undoing Wednesday, giving up one run on a wild pitch and another on a throwing error in a 5-2 loss to the Nationals. Willis, who is 7-9 this season, is 1-2 with a 4.59 ERA in six starts since the All-Star break.
