THREE UP

Indians starter C.C. Sabathia has a 0.78 ERA in 3 starts in August, allowing two earned runs over 23 innings. Sabathia limited the Royals to one run and five hits over eight innings in a 5-4 victory Saturday in the first game of a day-night doubleheader sweep. He struck out 10.

Manny Ramirez singled to extend his hitting streak to 27 games–the longest active streak in the majors–in the Red Sox’s 8-7 victory over the Orioles. Boston got its second consecutive win since a five-game losing streak had dropped it three games behind the Yankees.

John Maine took a one-hitter into the sixth in the New York Mets’ 6-4 victory over the Washington Nationals. With two outs in the fourth, Nick Johnson homered. That ended Maine’s scoreless streak at 26 innings, 25 as a starter. Nationals added two more runs off Maine in the sixth.

THREE DOWN

Jaret Wright lasts just long enough to get wins. Wright won his third straight start, 5-2 over the Los Angeles Angels. However, he does tax the Yankees’ bullpen. Wright hasn’t pitched more than six innings this year and has thrown 100 pitches in just one start.

Kevin Barry made his first major-league start for Atlanta, which is struggling to get by with three members of its rotation on the disabled list. Barry was yanked with one out in the fourth after surrendering seven hits, five runs and three walks in an 8-5 loss to the Brewers.

St. Louis’ Jeff Weaver was 4-0 in his previous five starts against Pittsburgh, but took the 3-2 loss after giving up three runs and 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings. Weaver (2-3) was out of the game when Jason Bay hit a tie-breaking sacrifice fly in the eighth off Braden Looper.
