This is regarding “Bigotry pins blame on Jews; What was Mel Gibson’s catch-all solution to his woes? `Jews are bad'” (Commentary, Aug. 6), by David Mamet.

Mamet is a talented playwright, no doubt, but does that make him an astute commentator on international politics (including the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict) or on the historical causes of anti-Semitism? Why do we assume that talent in one realm qualifies one to speak cogently or authoritatively in another?

I would urge the Tribune to find commentators who have already demonstrated their scholarly objectivity or sagacity.
