Good morning.

These are indeed summer’s dog days, with few scheduled events in Washington. Here are some of the few planned events, courtesy of the Associated Press.

Aug. 21 – 23. ACCOUNTANTS – The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants holds the 2006 AICPA National Governmental Accounting & Auditing Update Conference.

Highlights:

8:40 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. GAO Comptroller General David Walker speaks on “The Growing Fiscal Imbalance.”

9:30 a.m. Session on “CPAs Serving Governments Thriving in Todays Environment,” with Leslie Murphy, chair, AICPA, Southfield, Mich.

4:05 p.m. Session on “Issues & Challenges: Perspectives of Three Agency IGs,” with Carol Bates, Acting IG, Corporation for National and Community Service, Washington, DC.; Phyllis Fong, IG, US Department of Agriculture, Washington, DC.; Johnnie Frazier, IG, Department of Commerce, Washington, DC.

9 a.m. FEDERAL RETIREMENT THRIFT INVESTMENT BOARD — The Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board holds a meeting.

1 p.m. – 4 p.m. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES — The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology’s American Health Information Community Confidentiality and Security Workgroup holds a meeting.

Location: Conference Room 4090, Mary C. Switzer Building, 330 C St. SW.

4 p.m. – 6 p.m. RESCUE ROBOTS — National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Department of Homeland Security host a demonstration of urban search and rescue robots involved in a number of activities, including detecting injured people and trace elements of radiation in simulated natural disaster or terrorist attack conditions. The exercise will include various types of sensor-laden robots, including survey devices that can be thrown into disaster sites, unmanned systems that can cover rugged, uneven terrain, and small rotary-winged aerial reconnaissance drones.
