THREE UP
Jason Giambi homered twice, including a leadoff shot in the 10th, and drove in five runs to help the Yankees to an 8-5 victory over the Red Sox, their fourth straight victory over Boston. The Yankees extended their lead in the AL East to a season-high 51/2 games.
Roy Halladay retired the first 16 Orioles he face in earning his major-league-leading 16th win. The Blue Jays right-hander, who gave up two runs in seven innings, was perfect until Baltimore rookie Brandon Fahey grounded a single up the middle with one out in the sixth.
Orlando Hernandez came up with one of his performances of old to lead the Mets to a three-game sweep of the Rockies. Baffling hitters by changing speeds and arm angles, Hernandez won for the fifth time in six decisions by striking out eight in six innings.
THREE DOWN
The Reds placed Eddie Guardado, who had converted eight of his 10 save opportunities since being acquired July 6 from the Mariners, on the 15-day DL with tendinitis in his left forearm after the closer was forced out of Saturday’s game after facing two batters.
The Athletics put closer Huston Street on the DL with a strained right groin suffered while taking the loss in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader at Kansas City. Street, sixth in the AL with 29 saves, also was unavailable April 19-May 1 with a strained muscle in his chest.
Padres right-hander Chris Young left Sunday’s game against Arizona with a strained muscle in his upper back after facing three batters in the first inning. Young (9-5, 3.80 ERA), who tied his personal mark for shortest career start, was replaced by Jon Adkins.
