A commuter airplane flying from Philadelphia to Houston was diverted to the Tri-Cities Regional Airport in Blountville, Tenn., on Monday after a threatening note was found on board, authorities said. None of the 56 passengers aboard US Airways Flight 3441 was injured, and no bomb was immediately found, authorities said. Details about the note’s contents were not released.
Court overturns mom’s conviction
The Connecticut Supreme Court on Monday overturned a mother’s conviction on charges that she contributed to her 12-year-old son’s suicide by keeping a filthy house. In ordering the trial court to acquit Judith Scruggs of Meriden, the court said the law used to convict her was unconstitutionally vague. Legal experts said it was thought to be the first time a parent had been convicted over a child’s suicide.
Recount won’t change election, court says
A partial recount in Mexico’s disputed presidential race won’t erase the lead of ruling party candidate Felipe Calderon, the country’s top electoral court said Monday, but the judges held off from declaring him the winner. The court announced the number of votes it had annulled as the result of 375 challenges in the July 2 election, reducing Calderon’s 240,000-vote lead by just more than 4,000 votes.
Suicide bomber kills 17 at market
A suicide bomber targeting a former police chief blew himself up in a busy town market Monday in southern Afghanistan, killing 17 people and wounding 47. The Taliban claimed responsibility but in a rare move expressed sadness over the deaths of civilians. All the 17 dead were civilian men, said Ghulam Muheddin, the provincial governor’s spokesman. The 47 wounded included 15 children, he said.

Irate callers got their revenge at the Mobile Phone Throwing World Championship in Finland over the weekend.
Lassi Etelatalo, the men’s winner, threw an old Nokia 292 feet on Saturday, during the seventh annual event. The women’s winner, Eija Laakso, tossed her phone 167 feet, a new world record according to the organizers.
