Second glance
It may take people as little as 100 milliseconds to form an impression of another person–to decide whether he or she is attractive, trustworthy, competent and likable, according to research published last month in the journal Psychological Science.
That’s less time than it takes to form a rational thought. Princeton University researchers drew that conclusion after asking 200 people to make judgments about 66 faces of which they were given only fleeting glances. Impressions made after just 100 milliseconds largely matched those made without time limits.
