Confessing to a major crime is a time-honored manner used to get back to the “comforts” of prisons in the United States to avoid going to prison in a foreign land where much harsher treatment is generally the rule.
The only thing that can be done to this distressed person that would bring a measure of payback for the false hopes and incredible grief John Mark Karr has caused would be to send him back to Thailand for trial. Of course that would raise a hue and cry of cruelty by all sorts of do-gooders, of whom we seem to have a considerable overabundance.
