The tragic deaths of six children in a Rogers Park apartment are a shame upon all of us who call ourselves Chicagoans. Because a poverty-stricken family cannot pay its electric bill, the electricity is shut off. Use of a candle leads to an accidental fire. There is no working smoke alarm to alert them.

The Chicago City Council should immediately take up the issue of prevention. My suggestion is that our city require all electric and heating suppliers (including gas, oil and coal) to examine every residence to ensure it has working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and provide them if needed, free of charge, before shutting off service due to unpaid bills.
