Vencel Carl Hellman, age 92, of Oceanside, CA, passed away on Aug. 15, 2006. He was born on Nov. 8, 1913 in Waukegan, IL where he resided until 1976. He retired after 40 years as a tool and die machinist with the US Steel Company. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, John; his wife Mitzi; and brother Roland. A Funeral Mass was held at San Luis Rey Chapel Aug. 29, 2006 with Inurnment at the Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery. He played trumpet in a five piece band and was active in sports having played basketball for the South Side AC and baseball for the South Side Aces. He pitched for Dr. Eugene King for three years and was called “sinker ball” for obvious reasons. His first wife Mitzi of 66 years was a former head librarian. His current wife Marie of almost five years is still alive and well. He was an adept dancer, avid listener of big band sounds & was always kind, appreciative, considerate and sincere.
