Giants rookie Matt Cain allowed two hits in eight superb innings to win his fourth straight start. Cain (13-9) retired 10 of Colorado’s first 11 hitters, then retired 13 straight after escaping a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning. He’s 5-0 in six starts since Aug. 12 with an 0.21 ERA.

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter extended his hitting streak to 23 games with an RBI single with two outs in the fifth against Tampa Bay. Jeter’s streak is the longest by a Yankee since Don Mattingly’s 24-game run in 1986. The club record is . . . never mind.

UP

Michael Cuddyer had a bases-loaded walk for his 100th RBI. Cuddyer and Justin Morneau, who has 121 RBIs, are the ninth set of Twins to drive in 100 or more in the same season and first since Paul Molitor and Marty Cordova did it in 1996.

Angels outfielder Vladimir Guerrero was 0-for-4 in L.A.’s victory over the Rangers, the first time in 25 career games at Texas he didn’t have a hit. Guerrero had hits in his first 44 games against the Rangers before going hitless in a game at home Aug. 5.

DOWN

Red Sox manager Terry Francona said Manny Ramirez would not play this weekend against the Yankees. After meeting with the left fielder later, Francona said “there’s a chance” Ramirez, diagnosed with patellar tendinitis in his right knee, will not play for the rest of the season.

DOWN

Mike Cameron, only 3-for-12 against Reds pitcher Aaron Harang, worked the count full before lining a single to left to score two runs for San Diego. As he rounded first base, Cameron slapped his gloved hands together so hard that the smack was heard throughout the park.
