EVENT OF THE WEEK
Town hall meeting addresses regulation of capital markets
The Commission on the Regulation of the U.S. Capital Markets in the 21st Century and its Issuers and Auditors Working Group will hold a town hall meeting on “Evaluating the Future Viability and Effectiveness of Independent Auditors for Publicly Traded Companies” on Monday.
Participants in the town hall meeting include: Commission Co-Chairman William M. Daley, chairman of the Midwest for JPMorgan Chase; commission members Robert C. Pozen, chairman of MFS Investment Management, and James E. Copeland Jr., former CEO of Deloitte & Touche; Donald Nickles, chairman and CEO of The Nickles Group, and John Bohn, chairman of GlobalNet Venture Partners.
A morning panel will discuss the meaning and value of independent auditors, the current challenges facing the auditing profession, and the possibility of the failure of another major auditing firm and its impact on the capital markets. An afternoon panel discussion will explore reform ideas, such as legislative changes regarding litigation, developing mechanisms to encourage or require arbitration, mediation or special masters, and whether a national charter for public audit firms should be established.
The event, free and open to the public, runs from 10:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. at the Union League Club, 65 W. Jackson Blvd. For information, call Andrew Persson at 202-463-3162, or e-mail CapitalMarketsCommission@uschamber.com.
