After experiencing what many considered to be a sophomore slump, ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” launches its new season with creator Marc Cherry promising more of the dark humor and juicy mysteries that made the show such a sensation when it first took America by storm. Can he deliver? We’ll begin to find out at 8 p.m. Sunday with an opening episode that picks up six months after last May’s finale.

Where they left off

– Carlos was doing the nasty with the surrogate/cleaning lady, Xiao-Mei.

– Tom did the nasty a long time ago with a dancer who had his baby, and now Lynette must live with his second family moving into town.

– Susan moved into a trailer after Edie burned down her house and had planned to propose to Mike–who stood her up because he was busy being hit by a car.

– Bree escaped from the loony bin to save her daughter, Danielle, from the murdering Matthew. Andrew is still missing in action, after Bree abandoned him.

– Zach let his grandfather die and inherited his wealth but refuses to help his convict daddy get out of jail.

Where they’re going

– While hit-and-run victim Mike is in a coma, Susan strikes up a friendship with a handsome stranger (new cast member Dougray Scott) in the hospital.

– Gaby and Carlos are in the midst of a divorce while Xiao-Mei is confined to bed during her pregnancy. That means Gaby–gasp!–has to do the housework.

– Orson’s diabolical past begins to unfold just as he and Bree are getting set to wed.

– Lynette helps Tom keep his commitment to his daughter, Kayla (new cast member Rachel Fox).

– Edie’s hunky nephew (new cast member Josh Henderson) moves in with her.
