Batavia’s sidewalk and public parking lot improvement programs will cost about $22,000 more than anticipated, even after removing a proposed new sidewalk along Illinois Highway 31 from the schedule.
On Monday, the City Council approved spending $75,200 on new sidewalks, about $5,000 more than aldermen had budgeted; $74,000 on replacing sidewalks, $4,000 over the budget; and $73,000 to repair several Public Works Department parking lots, $13,000 more.
“We have the money in reserves to cover the excess cost,” said Ald. James Volk, who blamed the overages on the rising cost of petroleum-based paving materials.
Work is expected to begin next month.
