I’m sure when my friends read your article about the potluck club, they said, “Whoa! We can do better than that!” (“Potluck club serves up 50 years of friendship,” Page 1, Sept. 9). How about a club that was started in 1940 by a few girls from Schurz High School and is still going strong! (I was invited to join because my two cousins belonged and we were girlfriends.)
We graduated in 1941, found jobs but still met once a month at each other’s houses. Then came World War II and our boyfriends went into the service and we prayed for their safe return. We were still meeting once a month.
When the men came home, there were engagements, then weddings. We found places to live, had our babies and still met!
Eventually we said, “Why not have our husbands join us?” and they did!
We have had our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We had family picnics and Christmas parties with and without our children. We’ve gone on vacations together and mourned the passing of four of our group. There are eight of us left–a widow, a widower and three couples who are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversaries.
We love each other and enjoy each other. We have been blessed.
