Let us remember that a tip to a waiter is the diner’s way of acknowledging what, it is hoped, was courteous, knowledgeable, professional service provided by a well-trained waiter to the dining patron.

A tip is not an automatic entitlement.

Were it to be, what is often marginal service would likely degrade to intolerable, thereby spoiling the dining experience.
