SCORE IS FOUR TO NONE.

Trolley Dodgers Get Five Hits in the First Inning Off Lundgren.

Brooklyn, N. Y., Sept. 27.—[Special.]—The Spuds finished their season in Brooklyn this afternoon with a defeat at the hands of Pastorious, the Brooklyn southpaw, the score being a 4 to 0 shutout.

The Spuds made plenty of hits, but were unable to get them close enough together to do any good, for Pastorious was able to feed them his bonders in such a way in the darkness the champions were unable to connect safely when there were men on bases. Lundgren was the Chicago pitcher, and the trolley dodgers got to him early and helped themselves to five hits and four runs in the first inning, which proved enough to win the game.

The day was dark and threatening, and a drizzling rain had fallen all morning and there were not over 400 spectators.

Diamond in Bad Shape.

The managers did not decide to play until the last minute, as the diamond was in bad shape and Chance was opposed to working his champions on the slippery field. It was the last opportunity to get the game in and the local management decided to start in hopes they would be able to finish five innings before another downfall. The weather man was so astonished at seeing the new champions blanked he forgot to turn the tap and the whole game was played.

The Spuds hurried the game through and did not show any special amount of regret at losing, not needing the game.

Casey started the batting rally that won the game in the first round. He hit safely past third and then Maloney bunted along the third base line and beat Steinfeldt’s throw. Batch sacrificed neatly and Jordan came along with a two base wallop that scored Casey and Maloney and won the game right there.

To make sure the lead was a big enough one, however, Lewis poked a hit into right after Reardon had gone out and Jordan scored. Hummell, who took charge of second base in the place of Alperman today, added a two bagger to the collection of hits and Lewis came all the way home from first.

Two Double Plays by Spuds.

There were several times after that first when the locals threatened with runs, but the Spuds stopped them off with good fielding. Two double plays were made by the Chicago infield, and once, in the fifth inning, Lundgren proved to be the fielding star after two men had hit in succession and the next two batters went out on grounders to him, while the third man struck out.

Twice the Chicago men filled up the bases waiting for the hit to come that would bring some of them home. In the second Tinker and Evers singled and Kling was passed, but two men were out then and Lundgren was not able to deliver the hit. In the seventh Kling, Sheckard, and Gessler were waiting on the bases with two down, and Hofman went out on a long fly to right.

Notes of the Spuds.

The Chicago team hurried over to Philadelphia as soon as the game was over.

Steinfeldt limped and was not as keen after the bunts today on account of a sore foot.

The victory was a source of great joy to a bunch of rooters that followed the Spuds to the clubhouse exultingly.

President Pulliam assigned his new umpire, Rigley, to do duty at Washington park and came over to inspect the new man’s work, with which he was pleased.
