Not-so-happy shopper
Wow, who knew shoppers loved their supermarkets so (“Supermarket Swoon,” Sept. 6)! Not me.
I live in Berwyn, less than a half mile from a Dominick’s and Jewel. Safeway has abandoned the Dominick’s. On Saturday mornings, its shelves are poorly stocked and dirty and a good third of the fresh meat has dollars-off labels slapped on. Across the street is Jewel, [with] crowded, narrow aisles [and] TCF Bank customers spilling into the entrance. The employees are standoffish. The produce is sad. While certainly wonderful, Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods are not real options for a family on a budget.
I’m happy some shoppers love their stores, but I’m not one of them.

Elusive appeal
Loved the Michigan wine article (“Michigan winemakers pursue world-class status,” Aug. 2). Part of the reason the wines have not caught on here is that you cannot buy some of them via mail-order or Internet. Kinda frustrating if you do not go back to Michigan every year!
