FUNDRAISERS
– Instruments are needed for pupils in District 300’s Lakewood School and Carpentersville Middle Schools in Carpentersville who would like to join band or orchestra but can’t afford to buy or rent instruments. Flutes, clarinets, trumpets, trombones, saxophones, violins, violas and cellos are needed by Oct. 3 for this year’s musicians. – Rich’s Foxwillow Pines in Woodstock will donate money from hosta and perennial plant sales during October to the American Cancer Society for breast cancer research. Earlier this year, Susan and Rich Eyre, owners of the nursery, 11618 McConnell Rd., raised more than $32,000 for Heifer International through a hosta fundraising event. – The inaugural Autumn Golf Classic to benefit SuperSibs!, a Rolling Meadows non-profit national organization supporting the brothers and sisters of children with cancer, will be held Oct. 5 at Cantigny Golf Club, 27W270 Mack Rd., Wheaton. Registration will begin at 10 a.m., followed by use of the driving range and putting greens and lunch. – “The Saturday Night Event,” a storytelling festival featuring Jim May and other local storytellers, will be held from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Oct. 7 in the Mt. Prospect Public Library, 10 S. Emerson St. The event is a fundraiser for the Mt. Prospect Public Library Foundation and the Mt. Prospect Historical Society. – The Society for the Preservation of Human Dignity in Palatine will hold a “Fashion Flashback” fashion show and dinner at 6 p.m. Oct. 12 in Stonegate Conference Centre, 2401 W. Higgins Rd., Hoffman Estates. Fashions will be presented by Fashionique of Palatine. Boutiques, an auction table, and a raffle including a cash raffle will be available. – The 24th annual Barrington Area CROP Walk to fight hunger will be held Oct. 15 beginning at Barrington Middle School-Station Campus, 215 Eastern Ave. Registration will begin at 12:30 p.m. Twenty-five percent of all funds raised will assist Barrington Giving Day, Meals on Wheels, the Wauconda-Island Lake Food Pantry, Northern Illinois Food Bank, the People in Need program of the Barrington Ministerial Association, Project HOPE and the FISH food pantry in Carpentersville. – “A Bend in the Road: One Woman’s Journey Through Breast Cancer” will be presented at 7 p.m. Oct. 21 in the outpatient pavilion of Good Shepherd Hospital, 450 Illinois Highway 22, Barrington. The Barrington Area Arts Council StoryBistro event will feature cancer survivor Donna Dettman. MAKING A DIFFERENCE
– Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital’s Signature Gala fundraiser on Sept. 16 raised a record $225,000. All proceeds will support the construction of a 32,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art emergency department.
– Schaumburg resident Ruth Park, a business leader, volunteer and community advocate, recently received the Sterling Friendship Award from Friendship Village. The Retirement Research Foundation, a Chicago organization providing support for older adults, was awarded the Sterling Distinguished Service Award.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
– Volunteers can join Citizens for Conservation members to collect seeds from native plants from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Flint Creek Savanna. Meet at the group’s headquarters, 459 W. Illinois Highway 22, Barrington. Wear long pants, bring work gloves and dress for the weather. The seed collection is being held in conjunction with National Public Lands Day, the nation’s largest volunteer effort to improve public lands. For details, call 847-382-7283.
– McHenry County Conservation District is seeking help to collect seeds from prairie plants from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday along the Prairie Trail in Crystal Lake. Meet at the trail’s Main Street parking lot at Eastgate Street near Berkshire Drive. Bring a sack lunch, work gloves and sturdy shoes. Equipment and training will be provided. The seed collection is being held in conjunction with National Public Lands Day.
