Dr. Charles Bates, Ph.D., of Crown Point, IN, beloved father and treasured friend, has joined his loving wife Nancy and is now with the Lord. Charles passed away on Thursday, September 28, at St. Anthony’s Hospital, Crown Point. Charlie is remembered for his many community and church activities. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Crown Point, where he was an alumnus of the Great Banquet. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America as a National Property Committee member. Charles was a past President of the Institute of Food Technologists, the American Association of Cereal Chemists and an alumnus of Cal Tech (BS) and MIT (Ph.D.). Charles, after completing his Ph.D. in Food Technology, started his career at Procter and Gamble, Cincinnati, OH, in 1957. There he was instrumental in developing formulas for angels food and devil’s food cakes. Fifteen years later he moved to Crown Point and was employed with American Maize Co., Hammond (now Cargill), where he retired in 1993 as Vice President-Technical. While at Amaizo he was instrumental in the development of high fructose corn sweetener for Coca-Cola. After retirement he traveled the world with Nancy, his wife of 50 years. He is survived by his family; his sons, Charles J. Bates, Jr. and his wife, Diann, their son, Charles III, Rick Bates and his wife Robyn Lynn; and his daughter, Penny Crosland and her husband John and their children, John Jr. and Cathy. He also is survived by his brothers Phillip and his wife Myrna, and Brad and his wife Lydia, and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, he requested that contributions may be made to the Building Fund through the Church’s Memorial Foundation at 128 South Court St., Crown Point, IN 46307.
