My comment is in response to the article published about teachers taking too many days off.
I am a second year teacher in Chicago Public Schools.
It really upsets me to see the Tribune publish so many negative remarks about teachers who work against all the odds to educate our Chicago youth.
I have a class of 35 with half of my students performing below average on state tests. I work my hardest every day to change or make a dent in their lives.
I can’t even think about missing a day because I feel as though I would be letting my students down.
I work in two programs with the Chicago Tribune to give my students the ability to view current events and to show them what possibilities are out there.
They have all the odds against them, and my job is to be there for them and to give them the courage to be someone.
My problem with the recent article is that, for new teachers, these data are sad.
I work at a wonderful school, Carson, which supports and promotes a healthy workday.
I think that more schools and media should recognize and support those teachers who are working very hard.
I lose sleep every night trying to figure out how I can help my students.
I don’t want to lose sleep over this article.
