Although you did note that the highest rate of absenteeism is at schools with the highest need of dedicated educators, and grudgingly admitted that teachers are abused at these same schools, you failed to point out that this problem will not be addressed by embarrassing or harassing said teachers but by going to the root of the problem: the conditions that these teachers must work in.
No one, including schools chief Arne Duncan, can survive in this environment.
I noticed in the story that Chicago Teachers Union President Marilyn Stewart put the blame on the principals, but she is also wrong.
The fault lies with the entire school system, which is being run by theorists sitting in their ivory towers.
They need to get out into the field and suffer with the rank and file, and maybe then they will come up with a practical solution to improving the conditions that cause the high absenteeism, instead of pointing fingers at teachers and principals.
