It’s a new school year and you know what that means — time for book reports. We have some tips for selecting the right books. Besides asking the librarian or teacher for help, try these things too:
Start off by reading the back cover of the book.
Read the title, look at the cover picture, and reread the back to get an idea about the book, but don’t judge the book just by its cover!
Read a couple of pages in the beginning, and if five words are tricky, the book might not be right for you.
If you can’t figure out a word’s meaning, try to break the word up, sound it out, or skip the word and read the rest of the sentence. See if you can figure it out from the sentence. Use a dictionary. If you still can’t get it, ask an adult.
If you read a book and really like it, recommend it to someone else.
If you really like the author, look for more books by that writer.
Keep a notebook where you can write your response to the book (think journal entry), in case you think you might want to read it again.
