ANTIOCH

District 117

Bob Schenk, girls volleyball head coach at Antioch High School, will be inducted into the school’s athletic hall of fame in a ceremony before the start of the varsity volleyball match at approximately 5:30 p.m. Friday. Schenk has coached at Antioch for the last five years. He taught physical education at Tripp Elementary School in Buffalo Grove for 25 years, and coached volleyball at Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire for 10 years. Schenk plans to retire from teaching and coaching at the end of the school year.

The first session of a free six-week class designed to help parents deal with the challenges of raising their teenage children will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Antioch High School, 1133 Main St.. The classes will address adolescent development and behavior, the difference between effective discipline and punishment, the encouragement of teen independence and responsibility and the rights of children and parents. The University Center of Lake County will host a college night from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at 1200 University Center Drive. The program will showcase undergraduate programs. Marissa Ovassapian, a 7th-grade student at Highland Middle School, recently had her poem “What is My Medal?” published in the junior high edition of The High School Writer.

VERNON HILLS

Hawthorn District 73

The district will conduct free diagnostic testing for children ages 3-5 who reside in the district but will not attend kindergarten next fall. The screenings will be held Oct. 23 and Oct. 24 and cover speech/language, motor skills, socialization and overall cognitive development. Appointments are required and must be made before Oct. 13. WARREN TOWNSHIP

District 121

This year’s student representatives to the board of education are Karenina Rojas and alternate Carly Kroll from the O’Plaine Campus, and Brian Derrow and alternate Jeremy Horwitz from the Almond Campus. A representative and an alternate are chosen from each campus. Representatives are non-voting members who provide input to the board of education. Terms end at the end of the academic year.
