Patricia Elaine “Pat” Dougherty, 78, of Mattoon, passed from this life at 3:10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, 2006, at the Tabor Hills Healthcare Facility in Naperville. Following her burial in Mattoon on Saturday, a Memorial Service for Chicago friends and family will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 8, at the Tabor Hills Healthcare Facility, 1347 Crystal Avenue in Naperville. Pat was born July 26, 1928, in Chicago, a daughter of Ellsworth and Ruth, nee Griffiths, Cardwell. She was married to the late Dr. Raymond Aloysius Dougherty on Aug. 6, 1949. He passed away May 12, 2000. Survivors include her son, Dr. Jim Dougherty and wife, Lynne of Akron, OH; six daughters, Maggie Dougherty-Roberts and husband, Dr. Tim Roberts of Champaign, Kathleen Spear of Mattoon, Bridget Dougherty and husband, Tsutomu Kobayashi of Downers Grove, Patti Dougherty and husband, Kevin Davis of Chicago, Maureen Schmeier and husband, Joe of Chicago and Sheila Clare Dougherty of Kansas City, MO; 12 grandchildren, Matthew Dougherty, Katie Zuercher, Kerry, Jennie and Molly Roberts, Elizabeth and John James Spear, Nora Kate and Aiden Kobayashi, Tim and Meghan Schmeier, Isabella DoughertyJaime; and a sister, Eunice Williams of Nashville, TN. Mrs. Dougherty graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in Davenport, IA and remained friends with many of her classmates throughout the years. After raising seven children, Mrs. Dougherty returned to finish her education at Lake Land College and Eastern Illinois University, where she received a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in English. She taught in the English Department of E.I.U. for 17 years. Her love of reading, books and literature was the primary purpose for working part-time at Walden Book Store in Mattoon for many years. Pat and her family hosted two foreign exchange students, Luis Moraes of Brazil and Alba Olmedo of Paraguay, both of whom attended Dr. and Mrs. Dougherty’s 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration. She remained a die hard Cubs fan and had on several occasions attended their spring training camp in Arizona. She loved everything about Chicago and felt nothing compared to Marshall Field’s Department Store. Pat enjoyed traveling, especially to her beloved Ireland, where she visited numerous times and retained dual U.S./Irish citizenship. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church and the Literary Club in Mattoon. She will be remembered for her delightful sense of humor.
