Patricia Elaine Pat Cardwell Dougherty, 78, of Mattoon, passed from this life at 3:10 a.m. on Friday, September 29, 2006, at the Tabor Hills Healthcare Facility in Naperville. Following her burial in Mattoon on Saturday, a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 8, at the Tabor Hills Healthcare Facility, Semerad Pavilion, 1327 Crystal Avenue, in Naperville. Pat was born July 26, 1928, in Chicago, a daughter of Ellsworth and Ruth nee, Griffiths, Cardwell. She was married to Dr. Raymond Aloysius Dougherty on August 6, 1949. He passed away May 12, 2000. Survivors include her son, Dr. Jim Dougherty; six daughters, Maggie Dougherty-Roberts, Kathleen Spear, Patti Dougherty, Bridget Dougherty, Maureen Schmeier and Sheila Dougherty; and twelve grandchildren. A sister, Eunice Williams survives. Mrs. Dougherty graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in Davenport, Iowa and remained friends with many of her classmates throughout the years. Mrs. Dougherty received a Bachelors and a Masters degree in English from Eastern Illinois University where she then taught for seventeen years. Pat loved Chicago and felt nothing could compare to Marshall Fields; she remained a die hard Cubs fan. She enjoyed traveling, especially to her beloved Ireland, where she visited many times and retained dual U.S./Irish citizenship. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church and the Literary Club in Mattoon. She will be remembered for her delightful sense of humor and love of literature.
