Born to Be Wild
By Jill Baughan (New Hope Publishers, $12.99)
Everyone begins life with an unlimited capacity for fun, according to Christian author Jill Baughan, who is proud to have been born with a special goof-off gene. But then life intervenes and interrupts our playtime. Her book offers 35 ways to reclaim the freedom of fun. Each short chapter includes a personal anecdote, a practical way to find your wild side, and a Scripture quotation and lesson gleaned from the Bible.
1. To relearn how to play, brainstorm for 15 minutes about activities you loved as a child. Revisit as many as you can.
2. There are two kinds of fears in relationship to fun: the kind where you’re scared and do not want to do it, and the kind where you’re scared but really do want to do it. Go for the second kind.
3. “I used to think that women at the middle stage of life were ready to rein it in. Now I know the truth: We just want to bust out.”
4. “Wild” doesn’t have to bring to mind “heavy metal thunder.” It can mean “passionately eager or enthusiastic.”
5. Risks range from speaking in public to changing careers or traveling alone. It can be liberating to take one.
